History of Herrell's
Back in 1973, Steve Herrell had a dream: to open an ice cream store which served the highest quality, best tasting ice cream and toppings to be found anywhere. He revolutionized America’s stagnant ice cream industry when he founded the original Steve’s Ice Cream in Somerville, near Boston Massachusetts, and thereby pioneered the renaissance of homemade, fresh, “gourmet” ice cream. By the end of the first day in business, he had gone through his entire stock of 32 gallons.
By mechanically altering a small batch commercial freezer, Steve produced an extraordinarily rich, creamy, low-air ice cream. He was the first person to grind Heath Bars, Reese’s cups, and other name-brand confections and mixed them into ice cream. He introduced “smoosh-ins®” to the world and thereby gave birth to our passion for flavors such as Heath Bar Crunch and Cookies ‘n’ Cream, now classics everywhere and staples in today’s ice cream industry. With his flavoring expertise, he created luscious hot fudge sauces to ladle onto his remarkable ice cream. Steve Herrell and his outstanding ice cream and toppings gained national attention….and a legend was born.
After selling the original Steve’s Ice Cream in 1977, Steve could not stay out of the ice cream business. In 1980, he opened Herrell’s Ice Cream in Northampton Massachusetts with all of his original recipes and again gained national recognition, dazzling the ice cream industry. Herrell’s Ice Cream is still going strong, nearly three decades later.
In fact, Herrell has always maintained that the smoosh-ins® he originated are a lot of fun, but the real “proof of the pudding is in the eating.” That is, how good is the ice cream and hot fudge itself? Still offering unique flavors like Chocolate Pudding and Malted Vanilla, and of course his celebrated homemade hot fudge, now available jarred in Original, Almond, Peppermint and Orange flavors and available to grocery chains from coast to coast. Herrell’s uses only all natural ingredients with no artificial flavors or preservatives.
The success of Herrell’s Ice Cream has resulted in many industry copycats, but the ice cream and toppings quality has never been matched. From Ice Cream to Hot Fudge Sauce, Herrell’s remains dedicated to creativity and the pursuit of excellence.
Beginning in 2008, Herrell’s Development Corporation (HDC) assumed the manufacturing and distribution of all Herrell’s Hot Fudge Sauce products. Furthermore, it became the Herrell’s Ice Cream franchise company. Herrell’s Development Corporations has kept Steve Herrell as our flavormaster and at the same time increase sales and distribution of our hot fudge sauces to markets for more consumer availability, while keeping the high standards which has made Herrell’s famous. We have also began our expansion of sophisticatedly fun ice cream scoop shops, dedicated to introducing our original ice cream and hot fudge to new areas.
Herrell’s Ice Cream and Herrell’s Development Corporation: the original and still the best!
