Can you give us some brief biographical info about Steve Herrell? PDF Print E-mail
Steve was born in 1944 and grew up in the Washington, D.C. area, where he frequented the old Gifford's Ice Cream parlors and Hot Shoppes, when he wasn't making ice cream with his family in the backyard with an ice and salt, hand-crank freezer. His father had learned to make ice cream from his father, both raised on farms in Virginia, and Steve's mother's family was also steeped in wonderful family ice cream traditions.

Steve graduated from the University of Maryland and moved to Boston in 1967. After stints of driving a taxi and teaching high school English, he opened his first ice cream business in 1973. He sold that business in 1977, and moved to Northampton, Mass., in 1978.  In 1980, he opened the first Herrell's Ice Cream in that town, and this store remains in its original location today in Thorne's Market.
